I may not be able to do this in Indesign, so please help.

I am working on a full color brochure, but would like to use a few of my color photos as just tints of one swatch color. Does InDesign have a way of doing this, or do I have to make a tint in a cymk in photoshop then place it into InDesign. Back in the day when I used MS publisher it was just a one click operation!

Please help, thanks!

Hi bethbei,

To slect a color of a specific photo and have it in your swatches you do the following.

Place the photo in your InDesign document.

Create a rectangle and keep it selected.

Go to the toolbar and select the eyedropper tool.

With the eyedropper go to the color you want. The rectangle will be filled with the chosen color. Now you can put this color in your swatches.

If your first choice isn't the right one, hold down the alt key and with the rectangle selected make another choice in your photo.

Thanks for your reply. That is almost the opposite of what I want to do, I want to essentially desaturate my photo and tint it with an existing color from my swatch pallet.

But thanks, I'll use that info for other projects.

I don't think its possible in indesign.

I suspect that if you want a true halftone tint, you should be working with a monotone or duotone in Photoshop.

If you are placing an image to color in InDesign, you will need to use bitmap or grayscale images from Photoshop: full color images can not have spot colors assigned in InDesign. When the grayscale or bitmap images is placed, use the content or direct selection tool (white arrow) in the tool box and select the photo. Then choose your color swatch.

If you want to add a color cast with a swatch to a CMYK photo, it is fairly easy to do in InDesign. Simply draw a rectangle over the photo in InDesign. Fill the shape with your preferred color and then use the transparency palette to adjust the blending mode and transparency amount.
