Hello,
I am having a small problem at times while running my Symantec AV, as well as Windows Update. I have Windows XP Pro sp2. I think it maybe two or more resources competing for something. The event message reads "\device\lde\ldeport0 did not respond within the timeout period - ( crunching sound as well )maybe a hardware problem? Is there a utility that can show the I/O of applications running?

Symantec/Norton AV is a resource hog. Depending on your RAM & processor, the 2 apps may be overloading your system.

You can download Process Explorer (free) to see what apps are running & how much resources are being used at:

Run msconfig & shut down any apps that start @ boot that are not necessary to have running in the background.

The crunching sound may be either the cabling or, more likely, the HD failing. Check with the HD maker's site for a diagnostic test of your HD. If you haven't backed up your files recently, I would do so now. Also, run chkdsk for any problems on your HD.

Hope this helps! Bob

This is an example of failing hard drives dying.

Task Task Manager has I/O stats if you set it up in View/ Select Columns.

Do you get the noise in Safe Mode?

You could also use Autoruns to turn off all the Symantec stuff (vs. uninstalling it) and then reboot to see if the problem goes away.

If not, you can re-enable Symantec and look for another troublemaker. I think you should rule out hardware issues (not enough memory, failing hard drive) before you get too far into software troubleshooting though.

Hardware problems trump all software issues.

Symantec/Norton AV is a resource hog

Yes, this has been the case for much of the past 6-7 years since the release of the 2003 version. However, I just thought I'd point out that Symantec has finally rebuilt the software architecture in the newest 2009 version drastically reducing its memory footprint. It has fared pretty well in tests.

Thank You all for your help. I used msconfig and restarted with 'basic devices and services only' same problem. This time the monitor and mouse locked. Had to power down and up. Looks like HD problem. Thanks again.

Use autoruns instead of Msconfig for full control. Try it, you'll like it.

Regarding Norton - It doesn't matter what they've done now, their reputation is down the drain with lots of IT folks. The damage is done. The worst running computers I've ever seen were running Norton 360.

Agreed. A lot of that damage may indeed be irreversable. I haven't used any Symantec products since 2003 and don't see myself doing so in the near future. I was merely stating recent news.

Understood - not trying to kill the messenger, just the message. Everybody's trying to get "free" AV anyway.

I've read some positive things about Synantec's 2009 version but I'll wait to hear more before trusting it again.
