1. Is it possible to set up Win 2000 Server to initially be part of a workgroup as opposed to a domain? That is the way I have it configured, now but I can not see any other computers on the network and other computers on the network can not see the server.

2. Is it possible Win 2000 Server to be a DHCP client of a “residential gateway” type router? I would like to configure it this way because the router is “always on”, whereas the server will be used intermittently and sometimes will be off for days and weeks.

3. Is there a FAQ or something similar that provides a step by step procedure to set up Active Directory for a minimum type system. I want to do SQL/Server development and testing on a home network. This is needed by a person that has trouble seeing the “forrest” for the “trees” (me).

Thanks,

Phil

Yes to all three, for the first two check your configuration as I had initially set up our test network in that fashion and it worked fine out of the box. The third option is NOT compatable with the workgroup idea (AD is a Domain controller.)
For the first two (together):
Make sure the server is connected to the router, it needs to see this when setting up the network card. Now do a clean install of Win2K server, and when it finally boots DONT answer any of the questions starting with "this is the only server in your domain". Close this window and you have the first type of server (in a workgroup) add services as you need to. Once you are bored with this, disconnect from the router, but make sure another client is connected to the server (it needs something to make the network card active.) Do another clean install and answer yes about the only server. In this way it does a pretty good default install for AD, including the DHCP and DNS services required for this to work.
Check out this link--->
And select the step-by-step part one, thanks Mattwray for finding that one, it makes a default install of AD easy.

Though I'd like to take credit, SteveHewitt found that one, I just found his post!

My thanks to you both and Steve Hewitt too. I will try the suggestions and advise you of the results here. Just by looking, they appear to be right on. Thanks again.
