I got a fatal error message while doing normal stuff. After a quite a bit of research and trying to install SP5 will no luck, I thought of just copying the files on top of the existing. Wasn't sure if it would work. Then I saw that some one in the forum had that issue a year ago. What I want to know is, did you have to copy any files to directories other than say "C:\program files\microsoft visual studio\" ? I too had issues with MDAC_TYP.exe. Anyway, I'm in a crunch to get this fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

PS - OS is Vista, Visual Studio with VFP 6.0
Thanks

I just received this email from MS. Thought it might be of interest to others.

I understand from your e-mail that you are unable to install mdac_type on Microsoft Windows Vista. You are also unable to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Windows Vista no longer uses MDAC, but instead use Windows DAC and it comes with Windows Vista. Windows DAC is included in Windows Vista and is not available separately. kaelong, not only vfp6, but also vfp7 is not supported anymore. I'd suggest moving to VFP9 for only VFP9 SP2 solves some issues with Vista, mostly of graphical type, but nevertheless important. Also you benefit of many enhancements.

A VFP6 version allows you to upgrade with the VFP9 update version.

Nevertheless the chart of VFP/windows version compatibility of the VFP wikipedia article shows that VFP6 runs on Vista:
I remember there were some issues with the SP5, readme.html of the setup dir should guide you. But MS won't support VFP6 on any Windows verson anymore. VFP6 (SP0) is over 10 years old!

Bye, Olaf.

Thanks Olaf,
I did resolve the problem that promted me to try to update to SP5. Screen file was corrupt, so I had to reconstruct it. Then deleted the corrupted one.

But, I have wondered about updating to VFP 7 or 8 or 9.
Don't know if I can spare the money at this time. I'm just a part-time programmer with limited funds. I really would like to though.

Thanks again,

Kaelong,

It's perfectly possible to carry on developing in VFP6 on Vista, I do it all the time now - have done for about a year.

Mine VFP6 is SP5 btw.

I also still do a little in VFP5, and VFP9 works ok too.

I have stuck with SP1 for VFP9 though, I experienced some problems with target machines, so I didn't install SP2.

Thanks for the update. I will invesitgate the options. Do you know if I can get VFP with out going through Visual Interdev? Though I do like the software of VID?

You take the words right out of my mouth!

What do you mean by that?

Sorry, I didn't mean that. I was thinking of Visual Studio. The version of VFP 6 that I have was packaged with MS Visual Studio.
