Please let me know what you guys think... Still trying to get a good answer on hardware specs for my 3 SMS servers that I will be purchasing. Keep in mind that these 3 servers (1 primary and 2 Secondary) will be supporting only 1200 nodes across the WAN. Each machine will probably be about a 3ghz with 1gb of ram.

Primary server-- (4) 146gb Hard Drives RAID 5 (400 total users)
Secondary Server -- (4) 146gb Hard Drives RAID 5 (400 total users)
Secondary Server -- (4) 146gb Hard Drives RAID 5(400 total users)

Should I go RAID 5 or is that a waste? Should I just slap 2 146gb drives in all 3 and just run RAID1? Also do I need to just backup the Primary or all 3? I just dont want to waste money where it is not needed. But I also dont want to run out of space in 1 year..

I realize that I will need to get some pretty hefty space for my dist. points. Does the Primary and Sec Sites need to be about the same size in space? I mean can I push the files to the DP from the Site and then delete it from the Site to save space?

Thanks again... Let me know if you need any more info.

if one channel with Hardware controller then

one array (RAID 5) partitioned into volumes OS, SQL, SMS, and logs

if two channels with HD controller then
Channel 1 RAID 1 (OS)
Channel 1 RAID 5 (SQL)

Channel 2 RAID 5 (Logs)
Channel 2 RAID 5 (SMS)

The Proc duals on the Primary, the secondary doesnt need much horse power at all, the hd array doesnt need to be much either as its not really doing a lot on the secondary, remember advanced clients dont really talk to the secondaries anyway.

Ok so I will go dual Xeon with 4 146gb HD's RAID 5 for the Primary server. Probably just go Single Processor 3 ghz with 2 146gb HD's RAID 1. This seem ok to you?

Please explain to me again why I wont be using the secondary's much? When I create a package or whatever does it push it straight to the Dist. Point and not the Secondary sites? If so then the Sec. sites dont need hardly anything correct?

Also do I need to worry much about backing up the secondary sites or should I stick with just backing up the Primary for now?

Thanks again.
