I have a USB 2.0 Flash (thumb) drive, and my computer only has USB 1.1 ports. Every time I plug in the drive, I get this message in my system tray:
This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a H-Speed USB 2.0 port.
For a list of available ports, click here.

Now I plan on buying a USB 2.0 card very soon, but this message is annoying in the meantime. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of it?

Thanks!

Yes, it does remove the balloon, but it does it wholesale:
These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

It also doesn't stop the icon that was appearing with the balloon from showing up. It just seems like a stupid programming mistake. Why would you display an alert on a system that doesn't even have USB 2.0 ports?

Does anyone else have another possible cure?

I guess it is intended just as a helpful tip to improve your performance. One click on the icon removes the message and icon until next time you plug it in or reboot.

You have come up against a "by design" problem.

Man, if this seems bothersome XP must drive you right up a tree. XP is full of annoying notifications. Either you get them or you don't...your call.

Depending on USB controller:

Use Device Manager and highlight each USB controller entry, right-click, Properties.

Under the Advanced tab there may be a checkbox to disable notifications of USB errors, or something similarly worded.

Thanks bcastner! That fixed it! I'll have to make sure to uncheck those when I install a USB 2.0 card.

Re: bankboysb, XP's notifications don't annoy me in general, it was just that this notification was completely useless in my situation.

Thanks for all the input!

I know what you mean. IMHO 3/4 of the messages are completely useless, which is why I choose to disable them. I know what I am doing and when I need to do it, so rec'g messages every day about freakin desktop icons just isn't worth it.
