What would cause this to happen? Both of these pieces of hardware are new. I know that I can turn off the feature in the BIOS. But I am more worried that some one or something is hacking at my network and causing this to happen.

We are not running any application that would cause this to happen.. to my knowledge. Is there anything that I should be looking for?

I am really at a loss. Any idea what packet to look for on the wire?

Thanks,

The "Magic Packet" would need to include the MAC address for Wake on LAN (WOL), so it would be pretty easy to see if seperate packages were sent that included the two MAC addresses. Because it seems unlikely someone knows both your MAC addresses and IP address, this seems dubious.

It is more likely a WOE, or possibly WOR.

Wake on Event (sometimes called Wake on 47) if available would wake the system from any PCI related event. USB devices can trigger this. For example, a printer that ititiates a warm-up cycle.

Wake on Ring would require the workstations to have a modem with a phone connection.

There are no modems in either the server or the thin client. So the Wake on ring is out. The Wake on Event I will have to look further into. The thin client has not usb devices or printers attached to it. So the only thing that cold be waking it is something from the LAN. I turned off the WOL option in the BIOS the other day and no such event has happened since. As far as the server goes, it has been off for for a few hours now. We'll see if it turns on again.

Would requesting an IP address from a DHCP server do this?
