I have installed internet explorer 5.5 and then 6.0, but the same error keeps happening. I am trying to browse to different internet sites and my internet explorer windows will just close and I don't know why. I can't find any information anywhere on this problem. It seems to let me go to a couple links, but then it just will close IE down. Also I can't uninstall IE because it is not on my add/remove program list. Could somebody please help me. Thanks

Yes I tried that and it didn't work. Any other suggestions?

You can also use a freeware application called IEradicator to remove all of IE from your system so you can do a clean install of IE.

Well removing IE didn't help the problem either, but thank you very much. I guess it is deeper than IE, but the problem only occurs in IE.

I looked up "Shell stopped unexpectedly" in the Google Groups search form and found a bunch of posts on newsgroups about the error.

Some fixed it by updating the mouse driver, others deleted some rogue files found on their system, one replaced explorer.exe, etc....

So maybe there is something posted there that might help you with this error. joegz

You might try checking for viruses. Some viruses create a dummy IE that loads when you start it, and gives an error message explorer.exe has performed an illegal function and will shut down. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
