The server "" timed out. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

I'm loading a web that I can open from a colleague's machine but not mine.

When I try to open it on mine I get this message :

The server "" timed out. The current request did not complete successfully.

I am at my wits end here!

I have re-installed, gone through the registry, tried the m$ site... nothing.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?

Moreover, does anyone have a solution??

Are you opening the page in Frontpage and getting that message? If so, there could be a connectivity issue between your location and the server...I've had that happen on hosts int he past that don't have the best network/server specs.

You might want to try it again later, or during a non-busy time of the day.
 
Errr... it's on a network drive. Where is the server specified?

Sorry for the short reply. Had a modem connection from home and the page was taking a long time to load.

The FrontPage Web is on a Network drive (10/100 ethernet connection), therefore connectivity is *not* the issue.

The client machine is a Windows 98SE PC connecting to an NT4 Network drive via. MS Policy Editor and Windows Networking.

I've had this problem before and ended up just building the machine from scratch (inherited a badly maintained PC on joining the company) again.

The most irritating aspect of this is that the message does not say what server. It just gives the Double-Double quotes. Which only causes to confuse the badly formed SQL statements that underpin a lot of search queries.

I'm SURE someone must know what causes this. Any constructive help appreciated.

Ah, I assumed you were opening a "live" page via frontpage on a remote webhost and getting that message. I've never tried across a network if that's what you're doing.

Could you transfer the files across the network and then edit them "locally?"

A couple of minor breakthroughs on this front. I found an old thread on here that suggested creating a blank, or empty page using the same web name. You then copy over your files from your existing web and, hey presto, it all opens and works again. For JUST me. Not OTHER users on the network.

After reading your post, I also tried copying to my local D drive and this worked also.

However, neither solution is ideal.

*What* is FP trying to do *behind* the scenes as it loads up? That really is the nub of my problem, and indeed, the trigger for my original error message.

As with a lot of Micro$oft "produce", the core product is excellent and functional. However, they always seem to try and over-reach themselves, and moreover, under-document their attempts to do so. Trying to find anything on this issue by using a search engine (even the MS ones @MS!) throws up problems because of the 2 adjacent double quotes *within* the search string itself!

I was astonished when I installed a new firewall a few months ago and discovered that MS Word tries to connect somewhere. Why on earth does a word processing app. need internet access?

All I'm trying to do is use a networked drive instead of a local one. That is *not* unreasonable.

I suspect that FP is trying to be cleverer than it actually *is* and that is at the root of this issue.

In FP, try going to Tools\Options, then selecting the "Proxy Settings" button.

Then select the "Conections" tab and go through the Setup button and then the LAN settings button.

Microsoft certainly know how to hide these settings!

It sounds like you may have a proxy issue.

In the LAN settings dialog, try switching between "Automatically detect my settings" and the using manually entered proxy settings.

The manual ones seem to let FP load pages a lot faster across a LAN, but if you move your proxy, this FP setting will need to be changed each time, most likely.
 
I get this same problem, only my entire web is on my c: drive (I publish it to an isp server, but got the error while I was creating the site on c:). I tried to insert a picture, hit the "explorer" button to choose a file off of the drive rather than within the web, and I got this error. Any new thoughts from anyone? Thanks.
 
Error:
When opening or saving a FrontPage web with FP Explorer, it responds 'Server "" TimedOut..Request could not be completed.'

Solution:
This can be caused by having too many files in one directory (usually more than 250). It can also be caused by having too many web pages in the frontpage "web". These are common errors made by people new to FrontPage. The frontpage extensions begin to have difficulty with "webs" larger than 20MB, depending on how many files are there. What ends up happening is that the frontpage extensions cannot finish processing the entire "web" before the frontpage explorer times out waiting for a response. This is a problem with the design of FrontPage and isn't a problem with our server.

The easiest solution is to move files into subdirectories. If it still continues to time out, you may have to split the web up into several smaller subwebs so that it doesn't have to process so much all at once.

How do you move the files? One problem I have is that I have a lot of files in the "images" folder, but if I click on that folder within the FrontPage folder window, I get the 'Server "" TimedOut' error (so I can't get to a file list to move them). Would it work if I simply moved the files using Windows Explorer before opening FrontPage? Thanks for your help--
