The semaphore timeout period has expired.
Backed up 1 file in 1 directory.
Job completion status: Failed

Does anyone have any ideas of what can be done. Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks.

Before you start changing the registry entrys, you might want to try to use the Veritas driver. If there is no change, try the latest driver from the tape manufacturer. You may want to update the SCSI controller driver as well, as you at it

The server got rebooted (user pulled the plug!) and it's working fine now.
