I have learned SO MUCH over the last two weeks, including the exact nature of the equipment that our Telcomm guys are using to provide the physical line from our Main office to our Satellite.

We initially discussed bridging, but then after some advice given on this site and other factors, I started to set up as a 'routed' connection instead. I am having problems getting this to work adequately, and I think it is a matter of matching up the types of hardware and cables available. Here is a summary of the equipment being used.

The Telcomm company is using Avaya boards to fractionalize a T1 line from the phone company. They are set to DCE at both locations, and set for 64Kbps speed. THEY DO NOT HAVE an internal clock device. I have learned that this is called "asynchronous" in network lingo.

We are using Cisco 1721 modular routers at each site, with WIC-1T (Serial) cards connected to the Avaya boards, using DB60 to RS-232 cable. If everything I've learned is correct, that would make our Serial cards the "DTE" part of the link, which usually provide the 'clocking' for the link.

Trouble is, you cannot set up a WIC-1T card for clocking. I think I need the WIC-1DSU-T1 card which must contain a "service-module" that allows for configuring the clock. The problem with that is the WIC-1DSU-T1 card has an RJ45 interface, and my phone guy says his two options coming out of the Avaya (DCE) are RS-232 or V.35

Does anyone know if there is a way to make this connection? We are able to get the link working with the WIC-1T, but only if we don't put too many T1 channels on it and that means VERY POOR transmit speed. (We're talking worse than dial-up) Every time they try to add too many channels the line protocol goes down, which I figure is due to the lack of a "clocking" device.

Now I don't know if the right hardware is available to do this with the routers I have, or if I should abandon this plan and go back to working on the bridge configuration.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

 
Oh, yeah, one more thing.... I may be able to set up the Serial interfaces as "asynchronous" using ppp encapsulation. Would that be any better than just going back to a "bridged" configuration?
