Hey all you freaks,
Just wondering if all of you had heard about the nforce that Nvidia is making. I have some questions about it that I'd like to ask and see if you people could answer it.

For now, I am wondering if these chips can go into my current motherboard or do you have to buy a mobo that goes with the chip. But then I saw that they are going to test it with the Asus a7n266-v (new mobo). That would be a DDR 266FSB mobo which means that we can use the 266 FSB mobos?

More Q's will be up later, but for now this is mine. I would like to hear other people's opinions and Q's.

Thanks, LOL LOL LOL

I can almost say for certain that you WILL have to upgrade your Mainboard. Since the nforce chipset is part of the board you will have to purchase a Main Board that has this chipset. I just saw that too when I looked at ASUS site. I guess I might have to wait for Asus a7n266. I was gonna get Asus a7a but I guess I can wait. With that new chip, I think it would be great. I hope it wouldn't cost a lot :(

Anyways I am still researching about this nforce. Any interesting news - please post.

The boards are going to run about $100 - $150. They should be STRONG boards. NVIDIA has always been a good producer of graphics chips. You want info on the Nforce go to:

OK, I read everything about this chip and they never said anything of what they are trying to do. Is this supposed to be improve gaming? Entertainment (movies and stuff)? Server-based? Office? Just wondering.

It is for home based PC's. It will have an intergrated Geforce 2MX with 32 Meg RAm on board. So it appears to be desighned for the gamers in mind. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

i have seen some very inaccure information here. First off boards will run from $150-200 depending on the number of add-ons the manufacturer adds. Second off the integrated video is not GeForce2 MX but GeForce2 MX 400 which is slightly faster. This board is slanted more towards the OEM market than gamers, since GF2 MX is more of a business oriented card. Much more detail can be found here: . The motherboards are still at least a month away, but will be vastly superior to the current KT133A boards, although there still has yet to be released an affordable SMP solution.

I stand corrected on most of what I said. ;-) I do disagree on the Geforce 2 MX. It is a low price alternative for those who cannot afford the Geforce 2/ultra or geforce 3. Which makes it a VERY viable option for performance versuss price gamers. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. (Hardcore Gamer)

Well guys, do you think it would be a good buy if I get this thing. I am trying to upgrade to DDR or a dual processor. And now I just found this out. What would you guys prefer?

Here's my current system:

Asus A7V with Thunderbird 1Ghz
OCZ Gladiator with that really fast fan that came with it.
Geforce2 MX twinview with Blue Orb
392MB RAM
SB!LIVE Value
LinkSys Network Card
Some CD Burner (really good, unknown brand)
ACER 10X DVD
IBM deskstar 40GB

I thought if I could sell my Mobo, CPU and RAM, that would at least give me a little money to get the new Nforce Mobos, a faster CPU and DDR RAM.

Heck I dont see anything wrong with what you have now. I am a big gamer and I run:
PIII 800
512M RAM (running Win2K)
TNT2 @4X speed.

So your current setup is much better than most. But if you want more I would suggest going to AMD 1.2 running @ 266FSB.
512 Meg RAM (Running Win2K)
Keep everything else you have. Get ANOTHER Deskstar 40Gig (And put swap file on it.) Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

If you are a hardcore gamer you should know that you don't want intergrated video right? Is that what this thread is all about an intergrated video chip? That is how I understand it anyway. Well actually, since I am a really hardcore gamer and into graphics and quality of my games, I was thinking of getting the nForce setup AND adding a Geforce3 to it! (-: Sound Crazy? Thought so.

Anyways. I always hear about people partitioning the hardrive for swap files? What EXACTLY are swap files? downloaded files? mp3s? what? just wondering.

The new NVIDIA boards come with a (as stated before) Geforce 2MX 400. Which is pretty awsome for gaming. Personally any other board should not have intergrated video. The original point to the thread was the difference between his current board and the New NVIDIA based boards. (I think anyway). Then it turned into gaming. Hardcore gamers know what works best in most cases. Its being able to afford the hardcore gaming machines that is the problem. Hardcore gaming just means you LOVE to play a LOT of games. Well James is mostly right. But I also started it to get feedback from you EXPERTS out there who know a little bit more than I do about hardware. %-)

The Geforce 3 Would be superb. The swap file is basically an area of hard drive space the system uses as RAM (This is a basic explination). You should not Partition your system just to put a swap file on it. Adding a second FAST drive is much better. Downloaded files are just files you have downloaded from something like the Internet. mp3s are music files (songs).
