How do I rearrange the menu items off my desktop icons. When I used to doubleclick say a folder icon on my desktop I would open that folder. Now when I doubleclick it a search page comes up. If I right click the folder, a menu pops up. It has Search at the top then open, browse with paintshop pro, explore, and various other things with properties at the very bottom. How do I get this back to the way it was. I want to get the search off the top.
Thanks

try this dont know if it works

Go to Windows Explorer, like erm, for example go to my computer.

At the top, Tools -> folder option

You now have tabs along the top. Try pressing, restore to defualt on all the tabs and press ok.

See if that works

Try this fix from Microsoft:

I went here " and did what it said to do but nothing changed. Also something I just noticed is that the word SEARCH>>> at the top of my menu is in bold characters. I also went to folder options,file types but search is not listed there at all. I'm almost led to believe that some program I installed did this. Its been this way for a long time now so I wouldn't have any idea what program could have done it. Any ideas?

You edited the registry key and nothing happened?
Microsoft said:
To resolve this problem, edit the registry to set the value data for the Default string value in the registry keys that are described in the "Cause" section of this article to none:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
If this problem occurs with drives:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
3. Click Modify on the Edit menu.
4. Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor.

If nothing else works this might be worth a try.

file association of shell folders
thread779-230572

I did 4 scans using AVG, windows defender, spybot and Ad-Aware se. They all showed pretty much the same things bit it didn,t help my menus. And yes when I typed none in the reg editor as explained above nothing happened.

When you went to file types, did you select the "File folder" or the "Folder" type?

And then clicked on the Advanced Button?

You should then see a list of actions. If the first one is "Search" delete it. O.k your way out. and try to open a folder.

I went to "folder type", I went thru the entire list and there is no "file folder" type listed at all. But under "folder type" the only actions listed are open, explore and browse with paint shop pro. Explore is the one I choose as my default. Thanks vacunita for trying but I've already tried doing that but search is not even listed as an action. Thats why I think some program I inadvertantly installed did it for me. I have probably uninstalled the program by now. But the search in the menu is still there.

Examine you context menu handlers:

Please examine your Context Menu Handlers:
MS-MVP Ramesh discusses slow or other effects from bad handlers. In your case you want to identify and delete the handler creating the SEARCH >>> entry in the Context menu:

Method 2 - Using ShellExView to determine the Context-menu causing the problem

I'm checking with shellex and everything it brings up is from a company I know. ms, sun, nvidia, symantec, pure networks. I'm not sure what to look for.

I have now disabled all context menu items using shellexview, rebooted and no help, search is still there at the top of my menu list. Like I said before I think it is an item left behind after uninstalling some software but have no idea what software it was. I'm flabbergasted.

But one thing I forgot to mention, My Docs and My Comp icons on the desktop do not do this, they both have Explore as the first item, unused desktop and other icons leading to folders has this problem, icons leading to a program do not, does that help?

Start, Run, regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Reboot. Does it still happen?

Yes it looks that way, I created a new folder on my desktop (I just called it new folder) and it does the same thing, the way it looks is that any new folders are being setup like this.

From a clean install of XP:

First, reset and register Folder default associations:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Now copy the below and paste into a new notepad session:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder]
@="Folder"
"EditFlags"=hex:d2,03,00,00
"TileInfo"="prop:Size"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open]

@="[ViewFolder(\"%l\", %I, %S)]"
"NoActivateHandler"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec\application]
@="Folders"

Do a File, Save as, and save the file as fix_folder.reg

Double click fix_folder.reg and agree to the registry merge. Reboot and test.
