Don,

Believe it or not, despite my self-described "no off-button" sense of humor, I am not a clown. I am serious when need be. I simply like to laugh and have those around me laugh as well, assuming such is not ill-timed. I pride myself of being able to get along with absolutely anyone. The only exception would be the humorless person - I can only sort of tolerate them. I have ways of doing that, however, that do not interfere with the work at hand.

Thanks for your input!
Tim

BoxHead,

I really appreciate your input.

I don't tend to take job-hirings personally.

I hope to goodness I never bore a hiring manager - that (as you may have noticed), is not one of my weaknesses.

John, the "Portfolio on Tek-Tips" advice drew most of my attention. No offense to anyone here, but I've oft felt like an interloper. Y'all are genuine techsters - I'm at best an interrpretor. I don't code - however, I can communicate needs between the user and the developer.

I guess I'm not sure what a TTer would do with the likes of me.

Thanks for the advice - I can't wait to tell TT of my new (employment-related) email address!

Tim

I apologize. I never would think that you were less than professional in your work.. . If you haven't checked out the "Overcoming obstacles in getting my work done" I think I have seen posts there about this topic.

Don,

Apologize? For what, my friend?

You've neither said or done anything at all to apologize for (er, that's not an invitation to try again!) [smilies all around!!]

Thanks, Don, but if I have any reputation regarding 'puns' then the wait is mine to bear (i.e., I must wait to see if I was slightly humorous....)

BTW: I took your "pun" comment as a compliment. I guess I'm sort of arrogant that way.

Tim

==> You've neither said or done
That should be, "You've neither said nor done".

Tim,

Did I mention Networking?

I have found that while I'm not qualified for most of the jobs posted through TT, it does give me a place to direct people for viewing a photo, a cover letter, a resume and some answers to basic questions.

I've gotten the most use out of it while on the phone with my network people. I direct them to the site and we can review it together over the phone. It helps keep the conversation directed toward questions like "What do you think I should consider doing next?" and "Who do you know that could help me do that?"

Most of my networking lunches and coffees provide a lot of information on the family members of my friends (instead of job info) because when I was working I rarely had time to sit and have such conversations.

You can check it out if you want.

CRilliterate: You're right, it is not fair. There is a time limit for going through resumes. It may vary depending on a lot of factors, but there are always more resumes than you have time to read thoroughly. That's why the concise skills list on the first page works so well: it gets the reader's attention. The solution for the constantly-lengthening resume is to pare down the older entries as you add new ones. Any job more than 5-10 years old doesn't really need more than a sentence describing the position itself. The job skills and technology involved are likely pretty outdated anyway.

CRilliterate, I've done a lot of hiring and it takes a lot of time to wade through several hundred resumes. Many companies just toss any that are over 2 pages to help filter down the number to a manageable number. In fact often these resumes are filtered out by HR (who are filling multiple postions and thus have thousands of resumes to scan) before a technical person even sees them.

I have been working since 1978 and I have a two page resume, you can do it if you really focus on what's important and if you delete anything over ten years ago.

Everyone,
I am fine, my resume is getting me what i am looking for.

And as former twice unemployed I want to share my thoughts with SilentAiche about looking for a job.
JobCircle.com's Auto Agents work miracle.
Set it up and do nothing...I mean check emails and Apply.
I've noticed when you are not desperate everyone wants you.

Good hunting!
