Some time ago, I deleted task monitor's log file in a misguided attempt to remove unnecessary bloat. No problem in itself, but for various reasons I now wish to re-create it as re-enabling task monitor in 'startup' doesn't automatically rebuild the missing directory, and I can't remember what it was. If someone could tell me the path and names of the folders/files involved I would be thankful. Cheers, Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Andy,

Are you saying you deleted the C:\WINDOWS\Tasks directory?

The file is C:\WINDOWS\SchedLog.Txt

Are you starting it through the registry?

No, the expression 'directory' was incorrect! What I did was just delete the folder/file containing the actual logs, some time ago on the suggestion of a magazine article. (you tend to get wise to this!) What I intend to do is replace this folder or file to where it belongs, I just couldn't remember where it should go or what it was called. Task Monitor won't re-create it. This is unless anyone thinks Taskmonitor is a waste of time as regards de-fragging.
You ask if i'm starting it through the registry, no, I'm simply re-ticking in msconfig. Thanks for the file info though, I'll re-instate it and see if it works again. Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

re-ticking in msconfig

is fine, but I think it's a waste of resources and doesn't need to be run every time Windows starts up.. I've always done mine manually.

P.S. I've just looked on C:/Windows and Lo! We have the missing file! O.K. so far, the problem I have is that I'm sure it was within another folder when I deleted it! Well, anyway, I'll re-enable Taskmonitor and see if it logs anything. Cheers. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

I like the way you think! How does an idiot like me initiate it manually? This could be useful to know.Andy My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Andy,

Open the c:\windows\tasks folder and choose Advanced>View Log.

reghakr

Of course! Didn't think of that. Thanks for your help. Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Hang on, are we talking about the same program? I'm referring to Task Monitor, not Task Scheduler. Task Monitor monitors program usage so as to enable some sort of intelligent re-arranging when the time comes to de-frag. "Makes your programs load even faster" say Microsoft! Are we on the same subject? Thanks, Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

You're right!

I didn't know TaskMon had a log file though.

And yes, mine is still removed from msconfig and the registry.

This is all I could find on Taskmon:

Error Message: TASKMON Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module... (Q197791)

System Configuration Utility Lists Items Not in Startup Folder (Q187307)

reghakr

Yes, it does create a log, of some use perhaps if you want to see how often certain programs run, of greater use to de-frag of course. Probably, somewhere, I wrote down the details of what I deleted on a scrap of paper (like you do!) and have since mis-placed it. If I can find the info I'll post it here for your information. Cheers. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Then I believe you're talking about the C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG directory.

And yes, in Defrag options under Settings button, if "rearrange program files so that my programs start faster" is checked, the aplications will be listed here in that directory.

reghakr

That sounds very much like it. Thanks for your patience, now I know where to look I can rebuild it using another comp. for reference. Cheers, Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

How to Determine the Programs Disk Defragmenter Optimizes
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Microsoft Windows 98
SUMMARY
The following article describes how to determine the programs that are optimized by the Windows 98 and Windows Me Disk Defragmenter tool.
MORE INFORMATION

When Disk Defragmenter optimizes programs, it logs information about this optimization in a file named Optlog.txt. The Optlog.txt file is located in the Windows\Applog folder. To determine the programs that are optimized by Disk Defragmenter, use the following steps:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

In the Named box, type optlog.txt , and then click Find Now.

Double-click the Optlog.txt file, and then scroll to the Programs Eligible For Optimization section. Programs that are optimized by Disk Defragmenter are listed under this section.

Disk Defragmenter optimizes a program by moving the executable files and supporting files to a contiguous area of your hard disk. This can significantly decrease the time it takes to start the program.

Programs that are not optimized by Disk Defragmenter are listed under the Programs Ineligible For Optimization section. Note that programs that are not optimized do not have improved start times. These programs are flagged

PS.You might set the record of programs used to something less than the defaults, for you probably defrag a lot more often and thus a more accurate time period of say 30 days and the number of programs to include should probably not exceed 50.
When you have recreated the Optlog.Txt scroll down towards the bottom and you will find Control Parameters. Make your changes and go to File>Save. This should increase the optimization to something more reflective of your actual usage of programs.

Thanks biday, that was very informative. I don't actually defrag that often as my data is on other partitions, as is the swap file, etc but this is probably a handy feature to re-enable for when I do. Thanks again all. Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
