We are trying to determine how the dumpcheck command works. We have two 5L systems with the same amount of RAM installed.

One system is warning us that our dump copy directory is too small for a dump, the other server does not warn at all. The latter has less activity on it.

How does dumpcheck calculate the predicted size of a dump?

I don't know how it calculates but here is some rule (it's from dumpcheck manual):

"For maximum effectiveness, dumpcheck should be run when the system is most heavily loaded. At such times, the system dump is most likely to be at its maximum size. Also, even with dumpcheck watching the dump size, it may still happen that the dump would not fit on the dump device or in the copy directory at the time it happens. This could occur if there is a peak in system load right at dump time. "

use sysdumpdev -e to get an Estimated size. create your dump space a little bigger than that. as you get more apps running, your dumpspace size will go up.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
