The event viewer is continuously giving me this error, the source is bnchtape error 11. I m using windows 2000 with veritas 8.0. How do i fix this without unistalling the veritas software? This happens every other month. The drive is in the device manager and reports no problems.

It could be a driver issue. Also, the most likely reason as to why you aren't seeing errors in the device manager is that when you loaded Veritas you told it to be in control of the tape device. So it's reporting that it's having problems controlling the device.

Do i want veritas in control of the tape drive?

It depends. I set Veritas as having control of my DELL 136T tape library and haven't had any problems.

Benefits: Cleaning is controlled through Veritas. Changing of tapes (importing/exporting) is done through Veritas. All errors are in one place.

BTW-concerning your error message, try stopping and restarting the VBE services next time and see if that clears it up. If so, then it's due to Veritas losing connection to the device.

I've been getting that error message too. What kind of a tape back up do you have? I have an Onstream ADR 30. I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with my tape drive. It works, but not consistently. At least once a week I get some weird error message.

arobe: We have had a few workstations which use the Onstream drives. unfortunately, they are constantly having problems. we had to replace most of them and go with DLT or AIT. Those drives are more expensive, but far more reliable (and much faster)

Thanks! I had a feeling we would be replacing that drive. I have had nothing but issues with it. Yesterday I had to pry a tape out of it, and now Veritas says its off line. I rebooted the server hoping that would fix it, and no such luck! It's safe to say that I despise that tape drive!
