Hi folks,

I get the message: "The Disk in Drive F is not formatted. Do you want to format it now" when i try and access it by double clicking the drive icon. It is my second HDD and was working perfectly until now.

It says used space 0 bytes, free space 0 bytes. It had nearly 20Gb of data on it.

Identied as: WDCWD400BB-00DEAO

Any Ideas?? Is it possible to save the data, will a format make this good again?

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have..

A Reformat should fix it, but if it happens again, send the Hard Drive back for a replacement if still under warrantee.

However, I don't think you can retrieve the data...DO NOT REFORMAT UNTIL SOME MORE PEOPLE HAVE REPLIED - THERE MAY BE A WAY TO RETRIEVE THE DATA!

Can you let us have some more information about the drive?
Is it FAT32, NTFS or another format? Is it divided into several partitions or is there only one?
What operating system runs on the PC?

You format it , you lose your 20gb of data. So that is the last thing you want to do.

You can run fdisk and look at the partition table to see what it thinks is there. Just look, don't modify anything.

There is a program, "get data back" , that has been useful but I don't know if it is still available free on the web.

Many thanks for your responses, OS is XP Pro, no partitions and disk format was prob. NTFS!

Data wasn't that important and most was on an old HDD that i took out a few months ago so i'll just recover a lot from that.

Going to format..

Thanks again.

run fdisk to get info about partitions. Two questions: Has it got OS? Have you run drvspace or another progrma to compress disk?

I take it from the model number it's a Western Digital Caviar disk. I built a few machines with them 3 years ago and I've since been back out to every single one of them and replaced with Seagate disks. They were very cheap at the time and I've since found out why!!!!
