Hi,

What the heck is this.

I tried to do a backup the other night and this happened.

I check the Event Viewer and this error (The device, \Device\Tape0, has a bad block. ) with the code ID 7 , which is normally hardware anyway is being shown since the time of the last backup, every second until today....

Anyone out there wanna shed some light on this for me

Cheers

Craig

What do you mean check your tape drive....what am i checking it for...am i checking physically or through OS...

Just a bit moer help required ;o)

Cheers

I'm having the same problem and I've replaced the drive, bought all new tapes and replaced the cable and still no luck. I'll get good backups randomly and my failed backups are all across the board. For example, (we backup approx. 52GB) one night I'll backup 12GB before the error the next night it might be 35GB, etc...I guess my next step is to switch it over to another scsi controller.

This problem is more frustrating than Mike Tyson at a spelling bee so any help would be much appreciated. Veritas and Benchmark (tape drive mfg.) tech support were no help.

Thanks,

Lance

have you updated the latest driver for the tape drive ?
plus have you try to re-install the backup exec ?

twice i had the same problem, first was with DDS2 from HP and sometimes it will backup, sometimes it just won't, what ever i tried, once hp replaced it, it works perfectly for long time
now i bought a new DDS4 and it had problem after 3 months, and Dell replaced it, since then, so good so far

what OS are you running ? have you check your scsi bios and driver ?

This is atoughie, but very common. I would:

1. Run cleaning routine a couple times.
2. Try brand-new tape
3. Uninstall/reinstall Backup Exec
4. Change tape drives
5. Look and see if other devices are conflicting, added new software, or if screensaver/background stuff is running.

Hope this helps.

While my experience with this problem has usually been physical problems with the tape drive and/or the tape media, I've also had this happen when not using the Veritas device drivers. As a rule of thumb I now use Veritas tape drivers exclusively. Without them you often get freaky results.

If you don't know, or haven't already, run the setup.exe to install Backup Exec again, and make sure you check the box to install Veritas drivers. It should be simple enough to install over.
