I get the following message almost everytime I backup our Exchange 5.5 server on NT4 SP6a server. Although Tuesday it gave me this message. Everyday since is just wasn't able to connect to the Exchange directory. Another weird thing is after this failed I ran the backup job manually right after it failed and it backup everything fine connecting to the Exchange server fine. I run a differential backup on the file server in the job. Should I just run the Exchange in one job and the file server in another job and append the media?

Thanks for any help

1.
Check the versions of edbbcli.dll on the backup server and the Exchange server, see below:

Ref: The error message "Drive not responding" is reported when backing up the Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0, 5.0, or 5.5, Directory or Information Store using the Backup Exec for Windows NT

"If running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0 or 5.5, copy the file "EDBBCLI.DLL" from the [winntdir]\System32 directory on the Exchange Server to the [winntdir]\System32 directory on the computer where Backup Exec is installed. Then reboot the computer where Backup Exec is installed. "

2. Make sure that the Microsoft Exchange System attendant service is started.

3. Check the Job Definition/selections and switch to text view. Make sure this is correct information.
Another way is to go to Backup Selections and see if you can still select the directory for backup

4. Restricting information available to Anonymous Logon Users may cause an Unable to attach to the Microsoft Exchange Directory to appear during the backup.

Thanks for the help. I will try that. Another interesting tid bit. When doing a weekly normal backup to tape I have had no problems backing the server up. I just have issues on the daily normal backup.

You need to compare the two jobs (backup selections - text view, compression type, append/overwrite method etc)
you could even try recreating the problem job.
