Morning/afternoon/evening all.
I just thought it might be nice to put in a conversation thread where we can chat, say hi, introduce ourselves, that sort of thing.
I'll start.
Hi, My name is Chris, I'm English, but living in Melbourne, Australia. I'm a SAS programmer and have been for about 8 years or so, and I've been posting on this forum for about 2 years I guess. I actually enjoy helping people out here because it helps give me practice in things I wouldn't normally do in my day to day job, plus I think SAS is a good, powerful progamming system, and it's nice putting people onto the right path. :)

Chris,
I saw your post in which a guy attacked you for your response. It was way out of line, so don't get discouraged. My name is Nick and I work as a Healthcare Programmer-Analyst. Our main platforms are SQL Server 2000, Cognos Report Net, and SAS.

I'm fairly new to SAS (I've played with it for about 2 years on & off)now using it substantially in my work environment, so I look forward to mastering it. SQL is my strong suite, but I have a programming(Java,VB,C,C++) background as well as a statistical/data analysis background as well.

I'm more of a user versus a helper in Tek-Tips, but I appreciate gurus like yourself who are willing to help those of us who are finding our way.

This year I've got a major project of converting a SQL codebase of about 65KLOC (65,000 lines of code) to SAS(should be fun!)

Anyway, best regards and keep up the good posts and attitude.

Nick

Nice to meet you Nick. Don't worry about the negative poster, it doesn't bother me too much, my towering ego doesn't let me pay much attention to them! :)

Converting code is always "fun". I'd suggest reading up on the Proc SQL step in the doco for some handy information, should help you to reduce the amount of translation required as SAS can just pass the exact same SQL steps through to whichever RDBMS you are connecting to if you have SAS/ACCESS. That is, assuming you're keeping your RDBMS and that this isn't a full scale migration to SAS.

Hi everyone,
My name is Jack and I live in New York City, USA. I have been exposed to SAS for most of my life as my dad is a SAS programmer. That said I have been programming in SAS for 8 years. I currently work in the healthcare industry. I have been a C coder and now have mastered C# and SQL server.

Chris, I could tell you were in Australia (always beating me to the posts, as you're 16 hours ahead of me :) ) But residing in Melborne, now thats amazing! ( As that's the only other city I know of in Australia, just kidding :) I have a few friends that live in that fine city.)

Keep up the great work.

Good day to everyone!

I forgot to mention I live in North County San Diego, CA (about 50 miles north of the city of San Diego)and I work in Long Beach, CA in the Healthcare Managed Care industry.

Just ordered the "Essential PROC SQL" book from Amazon. I've already noticed though that not all SQL migrates over to SAS (previous post that Klaz answered for me re:date formatting), so I'm looking forward to learning the nuances. I'll actually formally start on that project in July, right now the majority of my code is in SQL Server, though I finally procured a SAS 9.1.3 install on my laptop and now get to play on my own(already have my SQL connection library set, etc.)

Have a good one guys!

Nick

Wow Klaz, a SAS programming family, never come across one of those before! :)
Well, if you're ever over visiting this fine city (and it IS a fine city I have to say, it's like London but without the stress and crowds) you should give me a shout.

Hello - My name is Dennis from Louisiana. I have used SAS for 20 years to do my work. I am a Process Engineer in a Manufacturing Environment. SAS Intrenet has worked well for me. I am not a sophisticated programmer but just trying to get the output that I need with the least amount of work. I enjoy Klaz and Chris's responses as they help me improve my skills.

Hi, Im Dan from New Zealand. I've been using SAS for about 4 years - am SAS Base Certified. I am a data analysis within the injury prevention field, but i'm more of a database person. I have agricultural science, epidemiological (statistical) and computer science tertiary education. I programme in a few languages e.g. SAS, VB/VBA, PHP, Java and of course play with a few databases. i just enjoy working with data.

This year i plan to learn more about Oracle admin, hopefully some more data mining techniques and would would like to move to Melbourne around July! Another kiwi trying to cross the ditch. Oh, i really want to learn more about data warehousing too.

Chris - hope you don't mind another Kiwi in your nice city :)

cheers,
Dan.

Especially as I'm officially a Kiwi myself! :)

Is anyone going to the SAS Global Forum in April? Its in Orlando, FL USA. Is it worth it?
Klaz

I've heard that it's really good, a good place to "network" and meet other SAS people. Also a good place to see uses other people put SAS to and learn new stuff. A guy gave a talk at our local user group meeting here in Melbourne, and he raved about it. However, it's very expensive. If you can convince your management that it would be a good idea to send you, or if you're a contractor and can claim some of the cost back from your tax, then go for it. Likewise if you've got a stack of money sitting around and you're worried about it going out of fashion. However if, like me, you've not got much cash, work for a small company, and are in a different country (on the other side of the world), I'd say skip it. That said, if they did an event here in Melbourne, I'd be straining to get there.

DanJR - Just had a thought, you should check out the local user group if you haven't already.
Next meeting should be around March I guess, they're not too good at updating the website with meeting dates in advance, so it's worth e-mailling them to register.
