Every 2-3 minutes this message is being printed in my Event Viewer's Systems :
"The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the computer ABC is a master browser, but this computer is not a master browser."

1) What is wrong with that ?
2) How serious is the warning ? Any impact on resources that the server can provide ?
2) How do I rectify the problem or supress the message ?

Thanks
DYN

shut off the browsing services on all servers except your domain controllers and set them to manual or disabled on startup

HI.

This message can indicate a network connectivity problem of that specific client.
It means that the client does not find other computers so it takes the role of master browser for itself - then it does find the domain controller which forces elections, then the connection goes down again and the same proccess goes.

So, check client for network problems. Go for phisical cabling and also check NIC hardware and drivers.

If you're using WINS, verify that the client is configurred correctly.

You can also run "ping -t" on the client and on the server to check the connection between them, and/or run some other diagnosting tools.

I am having the same issue but it is actually a BDC doing it! The network connectivity is fine, ping resolves and people are actually validating logins through it.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

It's not a problem if a BDC does it, unless its been configured to NOT act as a browser. You normally want DC's to be able to handle browse requests incase the PDC is offline.

By design the PDC wins browser contests.

You don't want workstations or member servers to be browsers. So do as 1sexypapi recommends, AFTER you've verified all the things Yizhar recommended.

Thanks polymath

The problem is the PDC isn't winning. It is constantly putting entries in the event log. I have another BDC so i am quite happy disabling browsing services on the duff one.

Thanks a lot,

sorry for gatecrashing your thread icintamyself

;o)

NO NO, the PDC is winning. Entries in the event log are OK. Its just reporting that that it received an announcement, not that it lost. It's normal function to see these messages. But if you apply these keys

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList=No

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster=FALSE (should already be set on members, but I check for it anyway in my config scripts just to be thorough)

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\Hidden=1 (REG_DWORD on Win2000 and Reg_BINARY on NT4)

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\LMAnnounce=0

Then stop the service and it will not start on the next reboot (because MaintainServerList is set to No -although it will make an eventvwr entry)

So if you want to avoid that -set the following key as well: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Start=4 (Reg_DWORD)
