Howdy all ,

This looks like the place where some smart folks can help me out with my query .

I'm currently using a Conexant HCF V90 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI modem in my Dell 8200 system ( Win ME , 256 RDAM , 1.7 Pentium 4 ) . After some searching it's come to my attention it's not a very good modem .

I experienced frequent disconnects and time outs and I noticed this happening more during the Winter months , especially during a cold wet spell or a warm rainy day . My son's computer ( Win 98SE , 750 P3 , 256 SDRAM ) use's a Ambient HAM modem but it'll stay online forever it seems and does very well . Here in the past few days we had some nice warm weather and sunny and the Conexant is now doing great. So I figure maybe it has to do with the outside phone lines . I have two separate lines installed and the line we use for the Internet is 7 months old and I live close enough to the Phone Office to qualify for DSL service ( Which at the moment I'm considering but the cost $$$ and problems of networking two computers and such to share the DSL is holding me back ) .

Would installing a Ham Modem be more beneficial or a Full Hardware type such as the USR V.92 Performance Pro. be the best bet to push the signals through during rainy and/or cold days ? Also how much of a problem would it be installing either one , since I'm fairly knowledgeable working on computers but can get freaked out in a second if something goes wrong ;-).

Thanks for any suggestions .

The Best Bet , Ham or Hardware ?

Ok thats not a bad modem and the reason that it dissconnects is proboly becuse you have a exposed or bada wire out side of your house this will happen when the telephone wire gets wet. And it might also be your isp. Check to see if your isp is set up dor auto dissconnect to.

I would have the lines to the house checked. Can you put the other computer on this line and have it stay on??

Thanks for your responses ..no doubt in my opinion it's the Conexant Modem ...both computers share the same line / phone jack ...and my son's computer with the Ambient HAM Modem stays online as long as he wants ......a few times he left it connected for over 12 hours . I also used his line to his computer and I still have problems with the Conexant ...but as mentioned before the past few days it's been clear and warm and this Conexant is doing it's job okayat the time being .My ISP says they do not use Auto Disconnect ( I know the guys pretty good ) and I have all my settings checked off for that too . I do suspect there's a problem on a outside line and here living in a small rural town it's hard to have Bell South to do anything about it .

I suspect the Conexant does not have enough muscle to keep it's self alive during the bad weather days . I'm wondering if I should go with a HAM modem or would it be the best investment to spring for a full hardware type like the USR V.92 Performance Pro USR5610B or maybe the USR V.92 External Fax ModemUSR56860 . My ISP says they do support V.92 . I was advised once to go with a HAM with a Intel Chip but I'm researching for the Modem that gets the most Yay's or Nay's .

I tried all sorts of AT commands and port settings and such and still have no luck .

I also was advised to go with a Diamond Supra from a fellow who works on computers here in town but that's the only brand he sells and I don' t know for sure if he's just wanting to reduce inventory or what .

Thanks again .........

I need to add also when I view the Modem Log after a disconnect it'll read " Remote Modem Hung Up " .

Also at times when I disconnect myself the Internet Disconnection Window and the 2 computers on the lower right screen( Online symbols ? ) will hang for up to one to two minutes before disappearing . The Sybols will have the Red X across them . Below is what I copied and pasted from the View Modem Log when it just hung again but this time for maybe for 15 seconds or so. Thanks again.
