I downloaded tftpd32 to get a copy of the pix config as a backup. I can not get the file to transfer and I think I have the TFTP server/client idea mixed up.

Is the TFTP client the part I use on the workstation to GET the file, and the PIX is the server?

Then, the path and filename thing...how name the file to get it on the machine from the pix? I made a directory on my Windows PC as C:\nctools\tftp, then when in the PDM it asks me to name the path and file which starts with /...
I am not able to get that correct.

Should I be using a cisco-specific tftp server app? I read the docs for config of the pix fw and it was very brief with concern to the tftp server.

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Nick

I would consider the TFTP application on your PC the server and the Pix the client as the Pix does not accept TFTP connections but MAKES these connections to your TFTP server. You are then writing the config on the Pix (client) to a TFTP server (ie. your PC runs a TFTP server)and then pulling the config from the server to the Pix.

When using a TFTP application on my laptop I use a program called Pumpkin. I then select within Pumpkin what my default TFTP directory is. So, within the Pix config I just the root directory as "/". When the Pix makes the connection to the server, the application serves the file from its root TFTP directory (D:\pumpkin\tftp for example). I don't have to tell the Pix the exact path because it's just relative to the default directory that the TFTP server serves from. So, if I had the default directory set up as D:\punpkin\tftp and then I created another directory within there called 'pix-config' then the full path would be D:\pumpkin\tftp\pix-config but as the default directory is D:\pumpkin\tftp then on the pix I would just have (with the filename 'pix-cfg';

tftp-server inside 172.16.200.113 /pix-config/pix-cfg

Normally I use a Linux TFTP server and the directory is just '/tftp' and so on my Pix I have;

tftp-server inside 172.16.200.113 /pix-cfg

.. as the server already knows that all TFTP connections are served from /tftp and so I only need to specify the root tftp directory (/) and the name of the file (pix-cfg)

Chris is right.. the workstation, regardless of the operation , is the server.

The server will both serve and accept files.

write net <ip address>:<filename>

i.e.

write net 10.10.10.10:pixconfig.txt

If you specify the tftp server and file name in the config then all you ever have to do is 'write net' and the file will be written to the server. I do this after every successful config change.

wr net
