Hello everybody; havent been here for a long time, good to see some old friends on...
Has anybody done any 2 way texting (to and from a cell phone) from within a VFP app?
I want to incorporate texting in a new app I am writing. It will be similar to Joopz (All suggestions, ideas and help would be greatly appreceated. Thanks

I have never done this myself neither 1-way nor 2-way, but if you use the Search Tool within this forum and look for SMS you will find others who have asked about it.

Also if you do a Google Search for: VFP SMS you will find a number of 'finds' which may assist you.

Good Luck,

We had a meeting with a company a few weeks ago that provide an SMS gateway and APIs/Web Services to integrate your software to their setup. They had some sort of on-line application you could utilise as well.

It all seemed pretty straightforward from a 'doing' - technical/coding point-of-view.

They made their money by selling you credits for the gateway (ie texts), which means having to buy a 'from' phone number off them. A 1 way number was fairly cheap (a couple of hundred £), 2 way more expensive (a few thousand £) as it needed a different kind of number.

But they were selling credits (Texts) in the bulk (thousands), and the more you bought the cheaper it was.

I imagine there are a number of providers out there offering similar services, and work in the same manner.

We have yet to have to go-ahead from the powers that be to integrate the service into our software, so can't advise any further!

I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours...

We do some here. It's only a matter of sending an email to a cell number, and vice-versa.
The main restriction is that due to the default do not call status of cell phones, you have to be basically "whitelisted" by the cell provider for any cell you want to send messages to.
Another limitation is that due to internet traffic, we have yet to find a provider that guarantees message delivery within any sort of a time frame.
On a side note, the cell provider we send messages through parses the email messages we send and sends them to a cell as SMS rather than email.

Just a couple heads ups to watch for.

Thanks;
Currently I am running Joopz in a VFP "wrapper". It works great but there is no control i.e. cannot incorporate any intelligence or get any feedback from joopz.
I am basically trying to incorporate mapping and texting (no emails) from within a VFP app for communications between dispatchers and drivers.
