Text to spreadsheet

HI

I'm using openoffice calc 1.0.1
I have a lot of data in text format and I am everyday 'copy/paste' data from text to spreadsheet format. I have to copy/paste the first line in the text file to the cell of the first column, the second line in the text file to the cell of the second column etc...
Is there a way of automatically to convert. Please help

Check this help topic : import; tables in text format. It does "highly recommend" that the text file be in CSV (i.e., comma-delimited) format, altho I think any text file will do. You just might have to do more work if columns run into the next.

I do not know of a one step way, but can do it in two steps.
Paste the text into an intermediate spreadsheet, which then contains the text in cells A1, B1, .. ,H1 etc.
Now select this column of text in the spreadsheet and copy it again.
Then select the leftmost cell in the target range where you want to paste the text, select Edit->Paste Special, tick the Transpose option and select OK.
This rotates the text so B1 goes to A2, C1 to A3 etc.
BEWARE - By default Openoffice leaves the Transpose selected during this session, so the next 'Paste Special' might have undesirable results. On the other hand, if you only use paste special for this function, it remains selected until you close Openoffice.
Also, if you paste multiple columns to start with, you may need to Transpose one column at a time.
