Hello,

I'm new to flash and am using the trialware for flash 7. I can't say I'm impressed enough to buy this yet. I have 12 days left of my 30 day trial and can't get a simple text fade to work. I got a motion tween working. Then after the text moves where I want it, I want the text to fade out. I converted the text to a symbol, set the alpha value to 100% in the first keyframe, then set the alpha value to 0% in the ending keyframe, and created a motion tween. In the timeline area when I rewind and play - the text fade looks excellent. However, when I choose the option to test the movie, the text doesn't fade at all! It just suddenly disappears. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

Thanks,

LeAnn

Using a device font?
Have you used a dynamic textfield?
If so, have you embedded the font?

Hit the Character tab in the textfield's properties and hit Select All...

When I created the text, I used Edwardian Script font. Then I converted it to a symbol (graphic) before doing the motion tween, and that worked fine. After the motion tween completes, I start with a new keyframe and do the fade separately for the symbol. (I had hoped to have it fade as it moved, but gave up on that and am just trying to get it to fade after it is done moving.) From what I had read in some on-line tutorials, it looked like using the alpha color property for a symbol was the way to make this fade. So, no, I don't believe I'm using a dynamic textfield, textfield properties, or an embedded font. Any other ideas?

That's odd. I tried just making a letter disappear and got the same problem you did and I've been using flash for years. But I've also upgraded to MX lately too. I can tell you that you're doing it the way I always have in previous versions. When I tried tint, brightness and such it worked for them. So it's something about alpha. I would write Macromedia about it and see what they say.

Hope that helps!

Going off of oldnewbie's questions (thanks) I looked closer at the default properties when you draw a letter. When you create your text make sure it's "static" before you convert it to a symbol and it will work.

Many thanks both to oldnewbie and codingfreak - my original text was not static, it was dynamic before I converted it into a symbol. Happy Holidays!
