Text box stuck within a text box

Somehow, when copying and pasting one small text box with a line of text into another bigger text box (also containing text), this smaller text box is "stuck" in position--and I cannot even delete it! A clue is that in the Measurements palate, replacing the normal X and Y coordinate measurements are these 2 strange little square icons that if the mouse is held over them say: "Align withText Baseline" and "Align with Text Ascent". How did this occur and how do I delete this box?

You need to treat the text box within the box as a piece of text (type). Get the cursor in front of it and backspace to delete - that should sort it.

Stevemoore,

Thank you very much! That solves a perplexing problem.

If you have a larger textbox and you paste another textbox or create a new one within the boundaries of the larger textbox, you will get a parent-child relationship between the 2 textboxes, if you have checked the checkbox named AUTO CONSTRAIN in EDIT/PREFERENCES dialog box. To avoid this uncheck it or another workaround is..
To delete the textbox inside or to come out of this..

1. Select ITEM tool from toolbox.
2. Select the larger textbox.
3. select ITEM -> UNGROUP from the menubar above.
(This will make both the textboxes free to move independently)

This also applies to picture boxes (copy the picture box with the item tool selected, then select the content tool, click somewhere in a text box and paste.)

Although it is a little disconcerting at first, there are some real benefits to this, such as using photos as bullet points, or placing pictures at specific places within large passages of text. If you're told to add another few paragraphs of text before that point, you don't have to worry about moving all the picture boxes around too.

With textboxes it's also a useful feature. Suppose you have a single column of text and have to insert a multi column passage, for example.

Of course, it's not suitable for everything, but it's nice to know it's there!

Thanks for the tips--they've been added to my Quark tips files.

All you need to do is that make sure that whenever you copy and paste an item in another box you have the item tool selected. With the item tool selected you can move or delete that item anytime. But if you have selected the content tool while pasting an item you wouldn't be able to move it or delete it. The only way you can move it or delete it is by selecting the content tool and placing the cursor after the pasted box and then pressing the backspace key on your keyboard to delete it. If you want to move that text box or picture box then place the cursor before that box and press spacebar or tab key on your keyboard.
