text box in Adobe Illustrator CS3

We have a problem with a text box in Adobe Illustrator CS3. We are
unable to resize text boxes with the selection tool. The squares that
appear on the corners of the box are closed/shaded, as opposed to
unfilled and we can only move the box, not resize it. When we attempt
to resize with the cursor it switches to the threading text function.

How can we reset to normal function?
