TEST SCSI SPEED 2

Hi,

our backups have started to run like a three legged dog and we are pretty much at a loss as to whats happened.

We usually get up to 17g/hr through our L9 running Veritas Netbackup backing up an Oracle 9i database. The L9 is attached directly to the v880 server through scsi.

Overnight our backups have dropped to about 6g/hr and have stayed that way for the past couple of weeks.

Is there a way we can test the scsi speed of the L9 to determine the throughput of data?

I suggest to check mesages first; sounds like a failed/faulty disk. You can use iostat to measure access times, but if you are using RAIDs on the L9 this is not that easy...

Also check to see if you disks are fragmented.

Has there been a signifigant change in the amount of data on the server? Are there a ton of small files?

SCSI Problems, this is not easy to detect! L9s are Copper-Connected 68pin SCSI devices? No FibreChannel!? I never saw them live...

a few ideas:
run 'format', are all Disks available?

Do you use SDS, Veritas VM or RaidManager, did it detect faulty disks?

There may be older problems in the messages, check this, is there a single faulty disk?

What cables do you use? Are they to long? Are the screws ok (can you say firmly bound)?

Shutdown host to OBP and run

What devices are on /pci@8,700000/scsi@5,1?

Try 'format </dev/null' to see if they are disks otherwise this is the tape drive channel.

Have you added any SCSI devices recently?

The error messages indicate that target 1 LUN 0 on the above SCSI channel has caused it to degrade from Fast/Wide mode to Fast mode - 20Mbs down to 10Mbs. I have seen this when a slower device has been added to the end of a SCSI chain - the whole channel degrades to the performance of the slowest device. Alternatively a cable has come loose or a terminator has been removed / auto-termination is not working. If you are using differential SCSI devices you need a special differential terminator. If the devices have lights on the SCSI channels they should have both autoterm High and Low lit, just one lit indicates a narrow SCSI device has been added to a Wide SCSI channel.

We have disconnected and re connected and even run devfsadm still no joy.

Sorry forgot to put in...

Only new hardware added is HDA card for a5200 fibre channell array.

But since this was added the backupw were ok anyway!

Any help woud be greatly appreciated!!

OK so all drives are Fibre attached and the only thing on the SCSI channel is the L9.

From the glm driver man page..

Target <id> reverting to async. mode
A second data transfer hang was detected for this target. The driver attempts to eliminate this problem by reducing the data transfer rate.

Target <id> disabled wide SCSI mode
A second data phase hang was detected for this target. The driver attempts to eliminate this problem by disabling wide SCSI mode.

I guess you've tried another SCSI cable, power cycling the jukebox and rebooting the server - once OS has degraded the SCSI channel I believe a reboot is needed to reset the SCSI card.

If after this you still get SCSI errors looks like you need to get an engineer to have a look at the L9. If you have a second SCSI card on the server you could try attaching the tape drive to that to eliminate it as a possible cause.

P.S. Unless it's been replaced recently it looks like your c1t1d0 drive may be on the way out.

P.S. What version of Solaris are you running? - check to see if you have the latest glm driver patch applied. This is 109885-16 for Solaris 8 - 109885-12 has some fixes for phase parity problems.

I would apply patch, power cycle L9 and reboot system - should clear the error and reset SCSI channel to Fast/Wide. If it still runs slowly and comes up with SCSI errors get then it's time to get the L9 and SCSI card looked at.

THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED ...


WE DID NOT APPLY THE PATCH!!

PROBLEM WAS DUE TO CASING AT THE BACK OF L9. THE CASING SCREWS HOLDING THE INTERFACE CARD HAD BECOME LOOSE. (NOT THE ACTUAL CONNECTION WHERE THE LEADS GO, BUT THE CASING THAT HOLDS THE CONNECTORS IN PLACE!!)
