Does anyone know what the BellSouth test number is for Memphis, Tenn.? The test number I use to use no longer works. It would help me when working on unmarked lines to know which phone number is on each pair.

Thanks.

101073217709889664 will work if 10-10 dialing works in your area. jeff moss

I don't know if this will work in Tennessee, but here in California I dial 1-800-532-7486 ..then when "the automated voice comes on I dial 11 --then the # I'm calling from is spoken back to me. Hope this helps.

I just call my cell phone and look at the caller id

crower the att number works here in FL I just tried it.

Jeffnoss26 your number works here also lots of digits to dial though though.

Thanks jeffmoss26 and crower both numbers work here in Memphis on a POTS line. I will have to test them on a Centrex system tomorrow.

Skip555 I thought about using a cell phone also but I am probably the last person on earth that does not have one. I am sure you don't care to hear my excuses. I have called friends with Caller ID in a pinch.

Thanks again guys!

that number is a pain to memorize. all the guys at my dad's work either write the numbers on their buttset or put them into memory on the buttset. jeff moss

Hey everyone, you may want to check out this Web page ( and scroll down to the 01073217709889664 question. Quite informative. After I dialed the 01073217709889664 number I realized that 10-10 is normally a paid toll call and surely did not want to have to be paying toll charges when checking out phone lines. But as you probably already know, it is a special free call.

Today I called Ameritech (800-660-1000) and it gave me my phone number as part of the automatic menus. jeff moss

In some locations 511, 611, or 711 might also be assigned for readback services.

In most BellSouth areas, 780-2311 will work. If your area requires 10 digit dialing, you will need to dial the area code then this number.

Let me know if this works in your area as well.

ncphoneman: tried the 780-2311 it requires a 1 or 0 from the memphis, tn area.

This reminded me of when I was little and we were on a party line and you would call 1193 or 1194 and hang up and your phone would ring along with a neighbor that the phone company had assigned to you.

Oh the "good old days" when phone sets weighed 5 pounds, no decisions to make as there was only one type of phone to choose from - a desk phone, rotary dialing only, one color - black, one cord length hard wired into the wall, one local phone company, one long distance phone company. If you got caught with a longer cord on your phone, the service man (no female's back then) would remove it and give you a lecture

in the "good old days " you would disconnect the ringer on the extension phones that you wired in at home becouse the phone company would call your number and measure the ring current draw if they suspected you had more phones than you were paying for

The 1010732-1-770-988-9664 number will give you back the number you are calling from followed with a 1 digit designator (a class of service designator?) followed with another number that identifies to the LD carrier your group/subgroup account number, I used it once a few years ago to verify access for a customer. so you get more than you were looking for when you call it. I do not think this is a toll number though. JerryReeve

a note on these numbers: Some LEC's, such as GTE a few years ago, would have all numbers that were part of a hunt group return the same numbers (the hunt group lead number) on these Number ID systems. I think that this is because these, for the most part, use the Caller ID as the source of info. What we had at the time was a numbr that was specific to each CO office such as NNX-1061 to get the actual number of the line you were calling from.

Reason I am posting this is so you do not count on the number you get back as being the exact number for your line until you call it and test it.
