We have a standard setup for our network connection (data jack connected to cat5e cable connected to patch panel). We are interested in a quality and detail tester....

Check out Fluke, they have an extensive line of network test equipment.

HP/Agilent also has network testers. Their prices are sometimes lower, but I prefer Flukes. Look to spend $3500+ for something that isn't just a continuity/wiremap tester.

Both the upper end Flukes,Pentascanners and the Agilent 'Wirescope 350' are great. I have used all of them from time to time, you only have to watch what you want it to do as far as the cost will go.
Make sure you get a service agreement as they may require yearly calibration, which can be expensive, but check with the maker before you purchase.

Good Luck

just for one time benchmark or short-term use don't forget the rental option. Probably $100 US or less a day. Most telcom supply houses have them.
