I have a client whose 2003 terminal server is extremely slow and i'm tearing the hair out of my head trying to figure out why... The refresh is terrible lately and it's running over dsl. I've run dsl testing, it's a little slower than it should be but it should run faster than it is.

The only thing they've had installed recently is accpac for windows but I have other servers running the same with no issues.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

have you looked at the size of the user profiles on the server? Do you have any disconnected sessions?

I hope you find this post helpful.

With Win 2k Server, I always found that if they were running desktops, fancy backgrounds etc, always slowed things up in a large way - at one point to the stage where a dial up was just as fast as a 1/2 meg frame relay circuit.....

In general have a llok at their settings - 256 colour, plain background etc etc

Just did... There's only 2 remote users, myself (admin) and one remote user. both profiles are about 100 megs in total.

I've tried both disconnect and reset of the sessions.

There's nothing in the event viewer to suggest problems.

Nothing fancy on the desktop either... i'm running 256 megs, disabled all mappings too, no change.

from memory AccPac is a web based application, is the server also running the SQL?

Yes to sql... It's been installed for about a month now and running fine. It's only the past week that the server has slowed down. There's only 5 computers in the office.

There's no viruses either.

So in that pst month, has the database grown a lot?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Pathping from the remote to the TS, any lost packets ?
Pathping from a remote to the other servers.

Don't suppose event viewer is showing any errors.

What does the DSL line speed show ?

Any patches to the OS or accpac added, did the slow down occur immediately after a reboot ?

Are these other servers Windows 2003 ?
Do they all have the same amount of memory, how much does the offending TS have?

Though a reboot should reset memory usage, at least temporarily....
If SQL is on the TS, both TS and SQL are memory intensive. Both will try to use a majority of memory without intervention. SQL can be limited through Enterprise manger, SQL server group, Local, right click properties, memory.

If you have a managed port switch, check the port to the offending TS server, check the ports to the other servers.

ok, problem solved... Telus (their isp) changed their dns servers, without telling anyone. The dns servers this client were using were at the bottom of the pile.

Seems to be alot faster now. Thanks for the input.

Had ISPs play with thir DNS servers a number of times. Best to add a 3rd or forth DNS server in the forwarding tab, giving you a DNS server(s) which will provide resolution if your ISP breaks DNS communication.
