Hi there have a little issue with my terminal service server

Now we use server 2003 and have about 10 licenses, all our client PCs use windows XP.

We can usually log on to the terminal server with no problems at all, but recently when we try to log on to the terminal server using the server name (appserver),the connection is not made and times out.

Now a solution to this is to log on using the servers ip address but i do not like doing this as there is obviously some kind of problem somewhere on the network.

I'm pretty sure this problem is simple enough to resolve!

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a DNS issue.

can you ping your server by name from one of the desktops?

If not check that your desktops are configured to use the correct DNS server. Then check your DNS server and make sure there is a HOST record in there.

If you do not use a DNS server (You should) then make sure you have host entries on your local machines that point to the Terminal Server.

The ping went through with no problems from my desktop, i can also connect to the server using the server name, the bad thing is its my gaffers laptop that wont connect.

How will i check for the host record and can i refresh the DNS as im sure this problem has occured before!

Jst attempted to ping the server name from my gaffers laptop and it times out each time, i then pinged the sppservers ip address and it went through no bother at all?????

Strange, any suggestions anyone

Thanks

Is your bosses laptop pointing to a DNS server?

from your bosses laptop run the following from the command prompt.

ipconfig /flushdns

Also check the event logs on the bosses laptop.

When i attempt to do ipconfig /flushdns on my mangers laptop the command prompt displays the following message - the requested operation requires elevation!

Ive also checked the tcp/ip settings and it states that the laptop is connected through DHCP but when i run an ipconfig/ all is states that DHCP is not enabled!

So waht IP address is the laptop getting, is it a 169.x.x.x address?

Yes the laptop is assigned a proper ip off the network!

192.168.16.x

I jst checked the DNS(not too familiar with this), there was an IP in the reverse lookup zones which conflicted with the gaffers IP address.

I deleted this and now the connection with the server name is going through fine?

Can anyone one confirm that this was the correct solution or jst a flook

Thanks again
