OT but I'm trying to decipher a copper line that is not hard short but I suspect it's getting wet

It's been a very loooooong time using my Tempo Sidekick.

Stress is high. Meter hovers around 50-55
If memory recalls, dump it on Leakage on 1K, rev it and the meter should blip and drop back to 0 ohms. If it lingers and hovers, that sorta confirms I have a short of some sorts right ?

Yup, you've got a high resistance short, most likely moisture, will probably ring-trip.

Thx. So far -

not observable on day of decent rain
observable 36 hrs later. Both dry those days

When dialing out, sometime I hear static
Sometimes it's garbled on the caller
Sometimes when dialing out, no dialtone for about 30-45 seconds and then I get dialtone

Something observed recently. Could not get it to go off hook and hang up.
When I did a inbound test call, 1st call did not get through.
Second call seemed to add more DC to the....as magically now, the phone was able to go off hook.

Any tips and tricks with the sidekick. It's been age's since I've used it. Kinda like getting back on training wheel

Obviously the resistance test is done with battery/dial tone removed. Start at the demarc, disconnect your inside wire from the telco, check for the high resistance. If multiple runs, isolate to bad run, figure out what else on on that run, maybe you can leave it disconnected.

If you find that all of the inside wire is OK, the short is on the telco side. If you happen to know the number to remove battery for a period of time, call it and check resistance once the battery has been removed from the Central Office side. Regardless, if issue is on Telco side, you have to have them trace it down and repair.

Isolated it out and I think we found the offendee

It's been a very long time since Ive used the Tempo not have I ever looked at the circuit with it.
If memory recalls, 30 and below on the stress.
I've got a few in the 50's and that's with nothing on it. Normal ? Not 100% how calibrated or out of wack the tempo may be
