I have a site that uses a template. When i update the template DW asks we whether i was to make the changes to the entire site...great. so it does that and now i want to put it on my web server but 1stly:

What do i put? the entire site??

2ndly:

When i put the page (essentially overwriting the existing page) on the server, it does not remove it old one and replace it, it almosts adds new lines of code in some i have funny characters at the end of my pages across the whole site!!

Any tips becasue i am sure you shouldnt have to delete EVERY SINGLE page on the remote server that used the template that you used originally before you can put it?

Templates are applied to pages that are set to use them., so when you modify something in the templates, it goes into every page that uses it and makes the changes. This only happens locally, so you have to then upload the website's html files into the server so they get updated with the template changes. You only need to upload files that were affected by the template, no need to upload images or other types of files that don't actually use it. Everything else should already be uploaded. And the actuall template file does not need to be uploaded either.

As forth other problem, how are you putting the files on the server, are you using Dreamwevers inbuilt facility or an independent FTp program?

If the first,. dreaweaver should automatically replace the exisiting file on the server with the newer local version when you uploaded.

yea if you use an ftp program they can mess up ur site badly if u dont use 'em right and i know this from experience.
You usually have to go into the correct folders where your uploading the files into to replace and select a certain file then upload,
IF you are using an independed ftp program ^^

I use dreamweaver tio 'Put' the files I was to overwrite. but instead it doesnt overwrite, it adds i think. Let me explain

I have a an asp page with 100 lines of code in.

I add (locally) a listmenu somewhere (the code is now 102 lines long.

I put the file on the server

The file on the server has 102 lines in. Great.

BUT if I put a page that is LESS than 102 lines long it buggers it, all the code gets jumbled and basically doesnt overwrite the file as a whole.

Not sure if I understand, And have never experienced anything similar.

It might be that you are editing the remote files directly and then uploading an old local version you have.

Maybe someone else here has stumbled upon a similar issue because I sure haven't.
I tried to recreate it by creating a 10 line page and then deleteing 3 lines so it becomes a 7 line page and uploading it, and it overwrites fine.
