I had problems writing files to a CD-Rom using Windows (XP SP3) a few weeks ago and a left with a lingering problem. One of the files that was sent to the CD is still waiting to be written to a CD. It will neither write nor can I deleted it.

I have cleared all temp files located at C:\Documents and Settings\(each user on the machine)\Local Settings\Temp which did not get rid of the temp file waiting to be written.

Does anyone know where Windows stores temp files waiting to be written to CD so I can use My Computer to get rid of it.

Thanks in advance,
Don

Hopefully someone may know exactly, but running from memory here, doesn't it have a link on the right hand side of the explore pan that says something like files are waiting to be written to cd. If you right click on it, I'm pretty much sure it offers delete as an option.

This all from memory from years ago, so hopefully someone can give a more difinitive answer.

Sympology,

You are correct and when I attempt to delete this way I get a message saying "Cannot delete (file name): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not in use". I should have included this in my original post.

The C drive has 49 gig free and I have administrator rights. The file is not in use in its original application with is Lotus 123.

My guess is that something is blocking your deleting of the files. If you can find the folder location for the files (I forget the default), and then restart into Safe Mode, THEN try to go to the folder, and delete the files, that should get you in business.

Otherwise, you could try a file unlocker program, or if you have to, a live bootable Linux CD.

I created a junk file and sent it to the CD burner then did a search for it. I found it in directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\Profile Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

Perhaps starting in safe mode or stopping the IMAPI CD-Burning COM service will let you delete it. Then there is a brute-force deletion program you can try called Unlocker, which I've never used (and its web-site caused Windows 7 to give me an omninous window saying Unlocker's site has been reported as unsafe).

On using an ulocker program, or force deleter or whatever, you could try looking at one of these sites:

You're pretty much guaranteed that at least the site will be safe, and generally the files they host are safe as well. At least I've not seen any issues with them. Also, MajorGeeks often has programs there that you won't find on most download sites, just b/c the file is not as well known, or not currently supported, but still works. For instance, RegScrubXP still works very well on Windows XP, but hasn't been supported in years.

Freestone - thanks for the path, that got things started.

I was not able to delete it with the IMAPI CD-Burning COM service stopped, in safe mode windows without networking or safe mode command prompt. I was hopeful on the command prompt approach, but alas the path was to long.

I will try one of the "sledge hammer" delete programs later when work gets out of the way and post back.

kjv - thanks for the additional alternative for the "sledge"

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP (or Vista)

Error Message: "Access Is Denied" When You Try to Open NTFS File System Folders

Problem solved very quickly using Unlocker 1.8.8 downloaded from majorgeeks.com. McAfee was not very happy about it, but I ignored her after creating a system restore point.

Taking ownership did not work - right clicking the file gave a short menu that did not include Properties. It did include open with but the file would not open in its original application - obviously the file was damaged.

I ran chkdsk by scheduling it after a reboot. I was not at my desk when it finished, when I returned the PC was at the login prompt. I looked in the root of c for a log file and in the Event viewer for some type of report without success.

Again thanks for your kind guidance.

Do you normally see a Security Tab? The last option in Folder Options/ View, "Use Simple File Sharing" might have to be unchecked to see the Security Tab (or are you using XP Home edition)?

Try these, see if they help with future ChkDsk's.

Try the L switch from a command prompt.

Use the view / filter option and search for Winlogon in the Event Viewer (Application Folder).
