I work for an Enterprise company with over 14,000 users.
I ran across a user who is getting cannot reach pop server in outlook. This person is the only one in the branch that has this error. Veryfied all the settings for the mailbox..all good. veryfied settings for DNS.Also replaced the DNS name for the pop server with the IP...same error. Ok then had them try to telnet into that server on port 110. could not establish connection. They could telnet into other servers in our farm. Checked the firewall logs and did not even see them hitting the firewall. Obviously the issue is they cannot connect to the POP server.I have checked everything under the sun. Figured I would toss this around the forum and see if anyone have any input as they always do.

Do they require port 110 as well, or another port? I know you've probably already checked, but I have to ask, is there any kind of firewall software controlling port access locally on his pc?

I would verify DNS/WINS settings and see if you can ping the server in question.

Yea it did require a port but a different one of course. The other machine that the telnet was successful was a machine that runs our mainframe stuff over unix. This problem is getting under my skin because we have checked everything under the sun. There is no firewalls on there end that would block it. They are behind our firewalls, but even unsuccessful attemps still have to go through DMZ to hit the POP server so it should be in the log. They can access their webmail via the webmail client... this is what is puzzling to me. If they can get the webmail then they hitting the POP server, but cannot telnet to hit.
