Hi,

Is it possible to telnet onto an AIX box start a process running, break the connection (disconnect) then re-connect later and see how the process is going.

I am pretty sure that once the connection is broken all of the processes are killed but I am unsure.

You should think of using nohup to start your process - this enables the command to ignore kill requests when you log off. You should then be able to log back in and see how your job's going whenever you wish. Hope this helps.

Typically, command syntax is
nohup <command> &

Where you usually put the command in the background so you can exit the telnet session. Of course, this would not work at all with commands requiring interactive response.

nohup is handy for non-interactive processes that need to continue running after disconnect, but the GNU screen utility is much more useful in the situation you described, where you want to reconnect to the processes and check its progress. Additionally, it allows you to run multiple independent shells on a single tty.

I use screen whenever I have an undependable connection, such as a modem, and when I want to start a processes while in the office and check on it from elsewhere.
