Telnet to port 25 returns long string *****220**** 2

When I telnet to port 25 on my exchange server from somewhere outside my network I get:

220 ***********************************************************0****0*2*********
***************200************0*00

If I do it from within my network I get:
220 mail.server.name Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.211 ready
at Thu, 3 Mar 2005 18:52:49 -0700

Some connections to the server were timing out, and mails returning undeliverable. I don't know if it has to do with the above or not. any help would be appreciated

You have a firewall in place, and it's running SMTP FIXUP /mailguard or something along those lines.
