I am attempting to telnet onto my Linux server from Win2000 machine, but it does not work.

Linux Server (192.168.0.1) <----- Win2000 (192.168.0.5)

Linux can ping to itself and can telnet as well.
Telnet server is installed and port23 is listening.

Win2000 can ping to itself.

However, they cannot ping each other when connected with x-cable. Cable is O.K. I tested.
NIC setting? Ifconfig shows eth0 with IP address.

Anyone have any idea what seems to be a problem?

Did you test it with different computers? If these two cannot ping each other, something is probably wrong. If yes, try to post ifconfig/ipconfig outputs. Do you have personal firewall/IP filter (Win) or iptables firewall (Linux) installed/activated? What does arp -a display? It is a list of things I would do while debugging such problem.

Verify your configured gateway on each, make sure they match..

if your network settings, hardware, cables are corret, you should have no problem.

pinging the linux box from the linux box shouldn't use the network card/cable, since it should be routed through 'loopback' since it's comming from the same machine.

The only real way to test, is to ping (A) from (B)

your ifconfig output could provide answers

Are the computers connected using a crossover cable or through a switch/hub? Do they have the same subnet masks?

Cable is X, a direct connection with no hub.
Both got the same subnet.

But I just found that when my linux is booting up,
I see my NIC eth0 show "fail", not showing OK like others.

Is this the reason why?
But I can still ping and telnet to myself.
eth0 is running status and ifconf shows valid IP address.

Any advice?

Yes, it is a reason ;-) When you try to telnet yourself, you are using 'loobpack' interface. It has nothing to do with network cards.
So, your network card doesn't work. Try to 'grep eth0 /var/log/messages' and 'grep eth0 /var/log/dmesg' (or open them with text editor) and look for some clue. What is your Linux NIC type? If it is (older) 3Com, is it set up for proper transceiver, IRQ etc and with Plug'n'Play config off?

Hi, when you installed Linux did you enable the firewall? I left the default setting of Medium, and after I installed it I couldn't get into anything. I normally connect via SSH using a program called SecureCRT. Anyways, until I disabled the firewall I couldn't get in no matter what I tried.

good luck
