can someone tell me why I can't telnet to my router?

Im using:
WRT54G
Firmware Version: v3.03.6 - HyperWRT 2.1b1

Started the telnetd and tried to telnet to 192.168.1.1 but no go.

Did not know you could telnet to a Linksys router. Thought everything needed to be done throught the GUI web interface.
