Telephony Service

I have a windows xp pro machine that had the modem stop working. Replaced modem and still wont work. I can query modem from the device manger modem properties but when I go to control panel and try to click on modem I get an error saying Phone and Modem control panel cannot be open. You may have a problem starting telephony service. I went to services and tried to start the service and I get an error 1084: This service cannot be started in safe mode. Can anybody shed some light on what this could be?

yes I have and havent been able to find anything.

& were you running in safe mode?

Check dependencies. The telephony service depends on the plug & play and the remote procedure call (RPC) services. If they are not running, then the telephony service cannot be started.

no I am not running in safe mode and now that you mention it the RPC service is started, but the RPC locater is stoped and I cant start it. I get the same error that I am in safe mode, but I am not in safe mode

Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Windows Components, uninstall the telephony stuff...

Reboot

Then go back to Add/remove windows components and reinstall it.
Reboot

Try it now.
