Telephone wiring Cat 6 vs Cat 3

I ran cat 6 cable for a phone system that only uses a 4 wire cable. My problem is that it seems as though I do not have enough power for the phones to work. I have all the other phones about the same distance that are connected with cat 3. Would this be an actual issue?

What kind of phones are you referring to? Do the phones require a ksu (server)?

Lets forget about Cat anything for now and start with the basic.
What do you mean by they seem to have not enough power?

Most phones will work fine on Cat6, unless they are at the edge of their distance limits. However, I suspect that you've run the Cat6 to Ethernet standards, hence your runs should be shorter than 90 meters. I suspect that you have a jack/pin out issue. Are you modular on both ends? Remember that the center pins are wh/bl and next pins out are wh/gn in a 568B config - pertinent if MDF end is a 66 block instead of modular.

Since cat6 uses a larger wire gauge than cat3 I can't imagine that cable is the problem. However since cat6 is a different gauge wire you need to be sure the connectors you used are designed for cat6.

As always a basic continuity & pin out test should be the first thing you check.

The pairs of wires in CAT6 cable are twisted tighter than CAT3 so a 1' piece of CAT6 will have slightly longer conductors that a 1' piece of CAT3. But yes....as others have said.... check to make sure all pairs are terminated properly and that the terminating hardware can support the thicker copper conductors.

OK so I have what looks like a 568B config and a 66 block
So can I assume that on the 66 block I need to punch down vertically wh/bl wh/gn or in other words 4,5,3,6 ??

Normally you use wh/bu and wh/br.

66 blocks are wired in this order (4 pair cable) from the top:

w/blue (bl)
blue/w
w/orange (or)
orange/w
w/green (gr)
green/w
w/brown (br)
brown/w

If you need to move the pair order around you should do that with crossconnect wire. Mforrence's post may have hit the nail on the head. You likely have a cross up in the second pair. On the 66 block the second pair is ORANGE, on a 568B jack the second pair is GREEN. 568A is more in keeping with telephone work. So you likely have three choices (my preferred order):

1. Reterm the jacks to 568A.

2. Fix the pair 2/3 reversal with crossconnect wire at the 66 block(s).

3. Use nonstandard order on the 66 block (bl,gr,or,br).

What kind of phones are these?

I am thinking on the station end, the phone will get -48v from the w/br.
