hi.. I have an issue with 'telnet'

I have just setup a new server, and added the ip address, the default gateway address etc..

I have added my other AIX servers to the /etc/hosts file and can tn to them from the new machine.

What I cannot do is telnet 'into' the new server...

Am I missing something really silly??

Thanks,
Roomer

The quick checks first

1) can you ping the new server from the others?
2) Is telnetd running?

1). Yes the new server is pingable
2). I beleive telnetd is active (comes back with a ps-ef grep telnet)

How do I stop/start this service?

refresh -s inetd will force inetd (of which telnetd is part) to re-read the config files. I'm not sure if this will help but it's wotht a try.
What happens when you try to telnet - does the connetion time out?

Check that telnet is on port 23 in /etc/services.
Whilst logged on to the console try
telnet localhost
Thjat will check if it can telnet to itself.
Apart from tha I'm running out of ideas - anyone else out there?

telnet is on port23 (/etc/services)

It sounds like you might have a DNS issue on the new server. If you have configured DNS "/etc/resolv.conf" on the new server, than make sure you have created a "/etc/netsvc.conf" file with "hosts=local, bind" inside of it. The new server will try to resolve the remote connections.

Hope this helps.

I have not touched any DNS settings since out of the box - do I need to configure this?

First thing to do is while you are on the new server from the console is to telnet to itself. If it works, than you know that there isn't a problem with the ports running. Try that first and then post back and let us know.

try to ping using numneric ip. If you can it is a DNS issue

Hi, I have a server running AIX 4.x and we are changing the LAN adresses, what is the fastest way to change the ip adress, subnetmask and gateway. Is the other thing that i shuld be aware of when we change the LAN ( ip segment)
