Hi

I would like to learn a bit more about ports and the activity going on, what commands (freeware utilities?) are available to help me get to grips with this?

Thanks for any help,

EB

I highly recommend ethereal. It is a sniffer application based on libpcap and provides an excellent method of learning how connections are actually negotiated, used and terminated.

If you have a linux box around, tcpdump is a great little utility. I even heard mention of a windows version.

Active Ports is a quick and easy program for just watching connections. Not a packet sniffer, but if you want to know what your computer is connecting to and what service is running on what port, I recommend it.

GRC is great for a very simple common ports check, but it only tests about .1% of the total ports that are availabe on your computer. If you are really serious about looking at the activity going on, check into Snort or NMAP. MCSE, A+
