TCP/IP will not Load 1

hi folks.
Two weeks ago I took a hit on my winsocks due to installing shields. I tried to corect the problem by re-installing winsock.dll and wsock32.dll in their proper directories. no good, so uninstalled TCP/IP and then tried to install it, does not work. here is the message. Could not add requested component, the error is: A non-recoverable error occured during a database lookup. What is this saying and what is it looking for. Is Tcp/ip a core component of the operating system and maybe I should have not unloaded it.

It shouldn't be a problem to remove/reinstall TCP/IP. I suspect you problem is either
1) a virus (install/update/run AV software)
2) a corruption in the OS (run diag utilities)

You didn't mention which OS you are running but when I have un-installed and re-installed with NT4, I found that I had to remove everything - all protocols (not just IP) adapters - everything. then when I re-installed I also had to re-apply SP6a to get it back functioning correctly.

I'm helping a friend of mine who gets the same error. TCP/IP will not load. DHCP services does start but then shuts down. I don't know what precipated this problem. He is running Windows XP Pro SP1 on a PII 400MHz & 385MB of RAM. I ran NAV with no viruses found. I reinstalled Windows by booting from the CD and choosing "Repair current installation".

I'm trying to avoid doing an FDISK and reinstalling Windows. Are there any other options?
