I am on a small network running windows 98 & nt. I am using netbui for network & tcp/ip for internet. I am sharing a cable internet connection using Linux Lrp and 10\100 netgear switch. I have one machine that has lost tcp/ip connection although it dynamically recieves an ip address and all of the other needed settings on boot up. But I can not browse the internet or ping any machine within the network or internet sites. Also none of the network machines can ping this machine, But it will do a loopback ping. Is their any type of software that will trace what is blocking communications on this machine.

I would test it from the hub first, install another pc on the port. Does it work ? If so check out your wiring. If not try another port on the hub. Also you can try yo set it up as a STATIC ip. ( Simple trouble shooting I hope I did not offend you ) Good Luck !!! Jeter@LasVegas.com

Thanks but I have changed ports and I have also assigned a static ip. But neither improved the situation.

When you say a loopback do you mean "ping 127.0.0.1"? That basically tests your ip stack, and doesn't really on your nic. Doing "ping 192.168.0.23" (assumming 192.168.0.23 is the ip of the machine in question) will use the nic.

Did you try another nic? Does the link light come on and the other lights flash?

I suspect that the nic might have gone bad. Did it ever work properly?

Thanks but I have changed nic cards and also i have pinged the actual ip address on this machine from this machine. I actually suspect some of the software on this machine as being the culprit,I was just hoping some software was available to trace this problem locally.

Well it looks like you have tested everthing here to the pc.
Last resort possibly is to reload the operating system and or just remove the tcp/ip and reload it first. Good Luck !!! Jeter@LasVegas.com
