TCP/IP suddenly crashes, when having too much lag

I´m playing the game Unreal Tournament over the internet. Since I have a new internet provider I´m having troubles with my internet connection. When I play on certain servers and I don´t get a data packet for over 10 seconds, I lose my server connection and it says inside the game "Connection Failed". This is normal, usually I can reconnect to this server at once. But now my entire TCP/IP seems to be dead! I cannot access any servers or even the internet. I have to restart my computer to get it back to work. Sometimes when I close my modem connection (56.6K ELSA Microlink) my PC suddenly restarts itself or I get a bluescreen! Noone could help me before, so I hope you can.

Try just taking out the phone cable thats going into your
modem for a couple of secs and then putting it back in and
reconnect if it happens.....I get that too and that fixs
it for me....but I dont know if it will work over there
as I live in Ireland and we have different connection
meathods etc etc!!!!

Hope it works!

Nope, it didn´t work. The entire protocol seems to be dead. But how can TCP/IP crash? How can I restart it?

how can you tell that your TCP/IP has crashed or is dead,
are you getting any error messages???
I presume you are using Win 98 am I correct? ~KeyTech

Yes, I´m using Win98SE. What would you call it, when you can´t ping any servers? No web-pages can be loaded and ping returns an error while contacting the host.

I'm having the same problems as BlackPanther. I can't load any webpages or connect to any multiplayer games. There is no doutb about it that is caused by my TCP/IP protocol. I even get a little window from Norton telling me to check and make sure that I have a TCP/IP protocol installed and to make sure that port 110 is open. I know this can be easily fixed I just don't know how to fix.

Have either of you tried to uninstall your tcp/ip
and reinstall it this could solve both issues????

I've reinstalled the TCP/IP about 10 times. The dial-up adapter two times and I've even tried installing an IPX protocol. I talked with the tech support with my IPS and they have NO clue as to what is going on.

Same with me. Reinstalled everything and same problem as before. My ISP doesn´t have a clue either.

OH! this is a tuffy alright!! What I would do is to run the
windows 98 restore CD!!!!...but thats really only a last option...what about reinstalling the complete network settings
and even reinstalling Internet Explorer...
I'll talk to some of my gouru's and see what they can come up with...!!!!
till then keep trying.... Jay~

Try this go to dslreports.com and see if you can download a fix to your pc . Hope this helps . #-) Jeter@LasVegas.com The best answer I could ever give is the one to maintain my Sanity

try this -

once Unreal crashes, get back to the desktop.

Verify that you cannot ping an outside address ( for instance)

then, ping 127.0.0.1 - this pings the local loopback address of the adapter. If this returns a result (ie: the ping is successful), your TCP/IP stack is fine (which I suspect), but your ISP is dropping you. I would suggest finding a better ISP, with a better connection rate.

The problem may be that your winsock is becoming corrupt. I have done this on a few machines at work that were having similar problems. What I did was to download the latest version of the winsock.dll (it usually comes as an exe file and installs some other fixes as well) and that seemed to fix things up.

The winsock of the computers at work were being clobbered by an old accounting package that would take it down for a while.

I just had a thought! does this only occur when you are playing unreal tournament? If it does then your opponents may be using win nuke on you or some other similar type program that fscks your tcp stack.....just a thought, you may want to try a firewall like zonealarm....

Hy guys,
Please tell as the configuration of the computers with as much details that you can give as, it seems that you must change your modem card because that dosen't understand with the mainboard, this is the reson that crash :))
try to change your modem.

OK, I tried 127.0.0.1 but I use a private network too, so this ping worked fine. I already downloaded the latest winsock.dll (I don´t know if it was the latest, it was an exe-file with one winsock.dll in it) but the problem is still here. And I already reinstalled my network card/ all protocols/ modem, but that didn´t help either. I use a 56.6 ELSA Modem on COM2 and a ASUS A7V, I don´t think that´s the crack point. Today I realized another thing: I was connected to someone with RogerWilko so that we could each others voices. Then I played Unreal Tournament and after 3 minutes my connection crashed AGAIN... I couldn´t ping anything BUT I still could here my friends voice and he sent an icq-message to me... but I couldn´t respond, neither with RogerWilko, nor with ICQ. Strange thing...

Sounds to me like you need to strip your situation down to trouble shoot your issues. Disable all the extra crap you've installed and see how long you stay. Add that all important gaming stuff u just gotta have one by one and see how you stay up.
