I have a Dell laptop running Windows ME and have been having trouble keeping an internet connection alive for more than 2 min. So I was guessing it was a problem with TCP/IP and tried reinstalling it but no change so then I removed all of the contents of network control panel and reinstalled them but still have the problem. I was thinking about reinstalling the TCP/IP information from the Windows ME CD but i'm not quite sure how to do that. If you have any advice I would appreciate it! - I should also say that I have a 3com 10/100 PCMCIA network card also.

Do you have a dial-up or Lan connection to the Internet?

If dial-up, what modem are you using? Doug

Dial-up, and Windows ME says I have an LT Winmodem i'm not sure that really correct though(i've never really checked). Another thing i should have said was that my internet connection used to be fine but slowly it got worse and now i'm lucky to stay on for 5 min. Oh and one more thing, ever since installing Windows ME I haven't been able to hear my modem dialing.

I think you have a software modem that just can't hold a line. Alot of the Motorola HSP modems were dreadful for that, but usually a firmware update would fix them. Maybe your ISP just doesn't hook-up well to certain HSP modems. I'd find out what model you have and check for new firmware, then call your ISP and see if they have any experience with that model. you should be able to turn up the "speaker" volume in the modem icon in control panel, or at least change when the speaker gets muted (set to after handshake)

if it is a Lucent LT Winmodem, have a lok here and see if it applies:

you may need to go to the modem manufactuer's site and download a driver that is ME compliant

check to see if you have a if idel time set. if you do out it to never that is in the porp of dial up.

The LT Winmodem is a Lucent product and probably on the same vain as the Motorola regarding connection issues. You may be having compatibilty problems with the head-end system your are connecting to.

I know the LT modems have had varying problems with Cisco and Bay boxes.

Also, if the modem description is merely LT Winmodem, then it would appear that you are using the native Windows ME drivers...the same thing occurs with Windows 2000. This could explain both the problems..connectivity and dial tone.

You may wnat to try the Generic modem drivers from Lucent or Agere as they are now called...it is version 5.92.

Ps - I think the volume is muted by default on the Phone Line. To check or adjust the volume open the voluem controls, pull down Options, choose Properties, and put a
check mark in the box for Phone In. See if it is muted.

first off thanks for all the help and..

ok i did find out it really is a lucent winmodem, but i'm not sure thats really the whole problem because i also have trouble transfering files to other computers on my network with my 10/100 LAN card(they transfer REALLY slow) and never used to have that problem either. thats why i was thinking corrupted TCP/IP?

More likely this is a separate problem. Like network cards that are borderline at talking to each other. If they are talking at all then your TCP/IP is probably good.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

peitzza-

Under your TCP/IP settings, have you turned off all protocols you do not need (IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, etc....) I remember with some PCMCIA cards on Win95 Laptops - you could have the best connection in the world, but if NetBEUI was 'ON' it would drop the line every other minute or so.

If this is at work, does any of your coworkers have a laptop like yours? If so, are they having some of the same issues?
